Jackson College Snow & Ice Removal

Central Campus in winter

Snow Removal Plan

A snow removal plan has been developed and is updated annually to identify two snow removal crews that will work in overlapping shifts.  The intent of the plan is to assure sufficient staff are scheduled to operate the equipment and to assure adequate reserves of man-power to keep campus clean during an all-day snow event.

What type of product is used in the winter for snow and ice removal?

The Facilities Department uses a new de-icing agent, Liquid Snow Shovel, on Central Campus sidewalks in the winter.  Liquid Snow Shovel is sprayed on sidewalks prior to each snowfall.  Liquid Snow Shovel reduces the time spent removing snow, keeps granular salt off the building floors and carpets, and is eco-friendly.

Winter Safety

The Facilities Department is committed to creating a safe winter environment for everyone on campus.  Here are additional steps that you can take to keep safe this winter.

When exiting your vehicle:

  • Maintain three points of contact when stepping out of a vehicle.
  • Use the vehicle for support.jackson college central mall in winter
  • Exit the vehicle before retrieving any items.

When walking:

  • Plan your walking routes and try to only walk on cleared and treated surfaces.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and take steps slowly.
  • When applicable use hand rails, especially when slippery conditions are present.
  • Try to avoid talking on cell phones and carrying heavy or awkward loads.
  • Be sure to wear gloves not only to stay warm, but to keep hands available for better balancing.

When entering a building:

  • Watch for melted snow or ice.  Melted ice may refreeze over night and cause sporadic locations of slippery areas.
  • Wipe your shoes on mats.
